YouTube title length checker: see where your title gets cut

Paste a title to count its characters and see roughly how much of it shows on a phone and on a laptop. It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is saved.

How to use the title length checker

  1. Paste or type your title in the box. It works with English, Hinglish, Hindi, Marathi and other Indian scripts.
  2. Read the character count against YouTube's limit of 100.
  3. Look at the phone and laptop previews to see roughly where the title is likely to be cut.
  4. If the important words fall after the cut, move them to the front and check again.

The hard limit: 100 characters

YouTube allows a video title of up to 100 characters, and some characters are not allowed at all (YouTube Help: Edit video settings). Studio will not let you save a longer title, so you never need to worry about going over by accident.

The real question is not whether your title fits, but how much of it people actually see before they decide to tap.

Where titles get cut, roughly

YouTube does not publish a fixed visible length, and it would not be one number anyway. How much shows depends on the screen size, the font size the viewer has set, the app version, and where the video appears: home feed, search results, suggested videos or the watch page.

As a rough guide, the first 40 to 50 characters show on most phones before a title is shortened. On a laptop, search results and the home page usually show more, often somewhere around 60 to 70 characters. Treat these as estimates. The previews in this tool are an approximation, not a copy of YouTube's layout.

Letter width matters too. Capital letters and wide letters like W and M take more room than i or l. Devanagari letters with matras can also take up more space than you expect. That is why a preview is more useful than a number alone.

Put the important words first

Since the start of a title is the only part everyone sees, it should say what the video is. Compare these two titles for the same video:

Before: I tried something different this weekend and made Kolhapuri misal at home

After: Kolhapuri misal at home: spicy kat with simple ingredients

The second one names the dish in the first two words. Even if a phone cuts it after 45 characters, the viewer knows exactly what they will get.

  • Start with the topic, the name or the result.
  • Move filler words like 'in this video' or 'today I' out of the title.
  • Keep series labels such as 'Ep 12' or a channel tag at the end, where a cut matters less.
  • Use a colon or a vertical bar to split the main idea from the detail.

Is a shorter title always better?

No. A short title that says nothing loses to a longer one that is clear. Use the full 100 characters if the extra words help, for example a place, a price or a model number that people search for. Just make sure the first part works on its own.

Tutorials and comparisons often need longer titles, because the details are the reason to click. Vlogs and Shorts often work with very short ones.

Titles in Hindi, Marathi and Hinglish

The same idea holds in every language: the first few words carry the title. In 'सूजी केक बिना ओवन: कड़ाही में आसान तरीका', the dish and the promise both come before the colon. Check Devanagari titles in the preview, since the visible length may differ from an English title with the same character count.

Questions

What is the maximum length of a YouTube title?

100 characters (YouTube Help: Edit video settings).

How many characters of a title show on a phone?

There is no fixed number. Roughly the first 40 to 50 characters show on most phones, but it changes with screen size, font settings and where the video appears.

Does the checker save or send my title anywhere?

No. The count and previews run in your browser. Nothing is posted to YouTube.

Do emojis count as characters?

Yes, they take up characters and space. If you use one, keep it out of the first few words so it does not push the topic past the cut.

Can I change my title after the video is published?

Yes. Open YouTube Studio, select Content, choose the video and edit the title. Change it only if the new title describes the video more clearly.

Does the title length affect ranking?

YouTube does not say that length itself affects ranking. What matters is whether the title clearly tells viewers what the video is, so they choose to watch and are glad they did.
