An Indian creator sits on a bed writing a short note in a notebook, with a phone showing a simple channel page beside her

Short answer: A good YouTube channel description says, in the first line, who the channel is for and what they get from it. Then add what kind of videos you make, why you are the person making them, when new videos come out, and one way to contact you. Keep it under YouTube's 1,000 character limit, write it in the language your viewers speak, and edit it in YouTube Studio under Customization, then Profile.

In short

  • Your first sentence does the most work, because it is what a visitor reads first at the top of your channel page.
  • Answer four things: who it is for, what they get, why you, and when.
  • Write in your channel's language. YouTube lets you add translations of your channel name and description for other languages.
  • YouTube's monetization reviewers may read your About section, so it should describe what you really make.
  • The 12 examples below are made-up channels written for this post. Copy the structure, then change every detail to match your own channel.

What is the YouTube channel description, and where does it show?

The channel description is the short text about your channel that you set in YouTube Studio. YouTube's Help page says it is accessible in the channel header, which is the top part of your channel page with your name, picture and subscribe button.

It is different from a video description. A video description explains one video and can be up to 5,000 characters. The channel description explains the whole channel, and YouTube's developer documentation lists a maximum length of 1,000 characters for it. If you also want a ready template for video descriptions, see our YouTube description template.

Who reads it? New visitors deciding whether to subscribe, brands looking for a contact email, and, if you apply for monetization, YouTube's reviewers. YouTube's channel monetization policies list the channel's About section among the things reviewers may check.

How do you change your channel description?

  1. Open Customization in YouTube Studio

Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer. From the left menu, select Customization, then Profile.

  2. Write or paste your description

Enter your new channel description in the Description box. Draft it in a notes app first, so you can read it aloud and check the length.

  3. Add links and a contact email

On the same Profile tab you can add up to 14 links. YouTube shows the first link near the subscribe button. You can also add a contact email for business questions.

  4. Add translations if you have viewers in another language

Select Add language, choose the original language and the translation language, and enter the translated name and description.

  5. Publish

Click Publish. On the YouTube app, you can also edit from your channel page: tap your profile picture, then View channel, and tap Edit under the description.

What should a channel description include?

Most good descriptions answer the same four questions in this order. The first line matters most, so do not open with "Welcome to my channel". Open with the viewer.

YouTube's tips for video descriptions say search terms are matched with the text in a video's description. YouTube does not publish a similar rule for the channel description, so we will not promise that it changes where you rank. Treat it as a page for people: a clear first line helps a visitor decide to subscribe, and clear words about your topic help everyone, including YouTube's systems, understand what the channel is about.

Use the words your viewers use. A Marathi cooking channel should say "रेसिपी" and name the dishes, because that is how its viewers think about the channel. Do not paste a list of keywords at the end.

Before you publish your description

  • The first sentence says who the channel is for and what they get
  • It names the kind of videos you actually make today
  • One honest line says why you make them
  • It says when new videos come out, and the schedule is one you can keep
  • It is written in your viewers' language, with translations added if needed
  • No keyword lists, no "all rights belong to their owners" lines
  • A contact email is added on the Profile tab if you want brand enquiries
  • It reads well out loud and fits well inside 1,000 characters

Update the description when the channel changes. If you started with vlogs and now mostly make recipes, rewrite it. A new channel can also use it to state a promise you will keep while you grow: our guide to getting your first 1,000 subscribers covers the rest of the channel setup.

Questions creators ask

How long can a YouTube channel description be?

YouTube's developer documentation lists a maximum of 1,000 characters for the channel description. Most good ones use far less, around three to six short lines.

Where do I edit my channel description?

In YouTube Studio, select Customization, then Profile, edit the description and click Publish. On the YouTube app, go to your channel and tap Edit under the description.

Can I write my channel description in Hindi or Marathi?

Yes. Write it in the language your viewers watch in. You can also add translations of your channel name and description from the Profile tab, so viewers in other languages can read it.

Should I put keywords or hashtags in the channel description?

Use the plain words that describe your channel, written as normal sentences. A list of stuffed keywords makes the description harder to read, and YouTube's spam policy does not allow metadata designed to mislead or manipulate.

Is it okay to copy one of these examples?

Copy the structure, not the details. Every example here is made up, and your description should describe your real channel, your real schedule and your real reason for making videos.

Should I add my email to the description?

You can, but YouTube's Profile tab has a separate contact info field for a business email, which keeps the description itself shorter.
