Free YouTube tag and hashtag generator
A few relevant tags and hashtags for your video, the way YouTube suggests using them. No account needed. Tags help a little; your title, thumbnail and description matter much more.
- A short list of tags that fit
- Hashtags for your description
- Titles and a description in the same go
What it does
Short on purpose
YouTube says tags play a minimal role. A few that cover your topic and its common misspellings are enough.
Hashtags that describe
Hashtags show above the title and link to similar videos, so they should say what the video is.
The rest comes too
The same request gives title options and a description, so you are not doing tags in isolation.
Check your old videos
In the app, Channel scores the packaging of every recent upload, tags included.
Questions
Do YouTube tags still matter?
A little. YouTube says tags play a minimal role in discovery and are most useful for common misspellings. Your title, thumbnail and description matter more.
What is the difference between tags and hashtags?
Tags go in the Tags field in YouTube Studio and viewers do not see them. Hashtags go in the title or description and link to other videos with the same hashtag.
How many tags should I use?
A few relevant ones. Dozens of loosely related tags do not help.
Is it free?
Yes. The tool here works without an account for a few tries a day, and a free account gives you a daily allowance in Write.
Works with
What YouTube says about tags
YouTube is unusually direct about this. Its help page says your title and description are more important for discovery, that tags can be useful if your video's topic is commonly misspelled, and that otherwise tags play a minimal role (YouTube Help: Add tags to your YouTube videos, https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/146402).
So a tag generator is not a growth trick. It is a small tidy-up step: a few accurate tags that catch spelling variants, then you move on to the parts that matter more. The same help page warns that adding excessive tags to your description is against YouTube's spam policies.
The tag limit: 500 characters in total
There is no fixed number of tags. Instead, all your tags together can use up to 500 characters. Commas between tags count toward that, and a tag with a space in it is counted as if it had quote marks around it, so each multi-word tag costs two extra characters (YouTube Data API reference, https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/docs/videos).
You do not need to fill the 500. Ten to fifteen well chosen tags is plenty for most videos, and leaving room is better than padding with tags that do not describe the video.
When tags actually help
- Common misspellings: biryani and biriyani, Kolhapuri and Kolapuri, Rishikesh and Hrishikesh.
- The same word in two scripts: कोकण and Konkan, पुरणपोळी and puran poli, so viewers who type either one are covered.
- Model names written different ways: iPhone 16 and iphone16, Redmi Note and redmi note.
- Place and dish names with regional spellings: Kokan and Konkan, poha and pohe.
- Names of people or series that viewers often spell wrongly.
How to use the tag generator
- Describe the video in a sentence, with the main topic, any product or place names, and who it is for.
- Pick the language of your video. For Hindi, Marathi and Hinglish videos, the list mixes Roman and Devanagari spellings where viewers use both.
- Read the list and delete any tag that does not describe this exact video.
- In YouTube Studio, open the video's Details page, click Show more, and paste the tags into the Tags box, separated by commas.
- Check that Studio's counter stays under 500.
Tags and hashtags are not the same thing
Tags are hidden. Viewers never see them, and they sit in a separate box in YouTube Studio. Hashtags are visible words starting with #, placed in your title or description, and viewers can tap them to see other videos with the same hashtag.
YouTube's hashtag rules are simple: no spaces inside a hashtag (join words like #HomeWorkout), do not add hashtags that are unrelated to the video, and if a video has more than 60 hashtags, YouTube ignores all of them. Up to three of your hashtags can show next to the title (YouTube Help: Find videos using hashtags, https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6390658).
Tag mistakes to avoid
- Adding another creator's name or channel as a tag when the video is not about them. Misleading metadata breaks YouTube's rules.
- Pasting a block of tags into the description. YouTube calls excessive tags in the description spam.
- Using 30 near-identical tags like "recipe", "recipes", "best recipe", "recipe 2026".
- Copying the same tag list onto every video.
- Spending more time on tags than on the title and description.
Tag checklist
- Every tag describes this video.
- Common misspellings and the other script are covered.
- No other creator's name unless the video is about them.
- Under 500 characters, with room to spare.
- Title and description were written first.

Questions
Do YouTube tags still matter?
A little. YouTube says tags play a minimal role in discovery and are most useful when your topic is often misspelled. Your title and description matter more.
How many tags should I add?
Enough to cover the topic and its common spellings, usually ten to fifteen. YouTube does not set a number, only a total of 500 characters.
What is the YouTube tag character limit?
500 characters for all tags together. Commas count, and a tag with a space counts as if it had quote marks around it.
Should I add tags in Hindi or Marathi script?
Yes, if your viewers search in that script. Adding both the Devanagari and the Roman spelling of the main word covers both kinds of searchers.
Can I use another YouTuber's name as a tag?
Only if the video is genuinely about them. Using other creators' names to borrow their audience is misleading and can break YouTube's rules.
What is the difference between tags and hashtags?
Tags are hidden and go in the Tags box in Studio. Hashtags start with #, sit in your title or description, are visible and can be tapped by viewers.
Should I put tags in my description?
No. A list of keywords in the description counts as spam under YouTube's policies. Put tags in the Tags box and keep the description for real sentences.
Is the tag generator free?
Yes, a few tries every hour with no account. The same request also gives you titles, a description and hashtags.
Will tags help my video rank?
Do not expect much. Tags help YouTube with spelling variants, but no tag list can promise rankings or views.
